Project Win: SR A1A Improvements Phased Design-Build, FDOT District Five
The Superior/KCA team was awarded a contract by FDOT District Five to undertake the design and construction of SR A1A Improvements, spanning from Roberta Road in Volusia County to Osprey Drive in Flagler County. This project is a result of the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Nicole in November 2022. The contract was procured as an emergency phased design-build (PDB) to commence the project in stages before the onset of the 2023 Hurricane Season.
Under this contract, our team will assume responsibility for various tasks, including NEPA documentation, surveying, permitting, utility coordination, and the development of coastal protection measures. These measures encompass dune renourishment, dune vegetation, as well as revetment and wall systems along the east side of SR A1A. Additionally, we will be tasked with revetment removal, roadway reconstruction, and drainage improvements.
Leading the proposed team from KCA as Project Manager (PM) and Roadway Engineer-of-Record (EOR) is Kevin Tasillo, PE, PTOE. Supporting him will be Simon Hagedoorn, PE, as Structures EOR, and Robert Whitman, who will handle the NEPA Documents/Compliance aspect. The contract will be managed from KCA’s Orlando office.
We extend our congratulations to the pursuit team, including Chris Roberts, PE, and Martin Horwitz. We are grateful to all those who contributed to the preparation of the letter of response for this 5-day emergency procurement, as well as the marketing efforts that contributed to our success in securing this contract.
