Edison Avenue Extension Design

KCA is assisting the City of Fort Myers with advancing a project to extend Edison Avenue approximately 1 mile from Arcadia Street to Ortiz Avenue and enhancing east-west connectivity through the future Eastwood Village development area. The proposed roadway extension will connect the existing Edison Avenue to Hanson Street to the south and Ortiz Avenue to the east, terminating approximately 500 feet south of SR 82 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard). Improvements include milling and resurfacing of the final 500 feet up to SR 82, as well as a potential roundabout at the new three-leg intersection, intersection and turnout improvements, and a shared-use path. The alignment has been revised to avoid future residential development while still aligning with Ortiz Avenue at the Lee County Correctional Facility, allowing for a full, signalized four-way intersection.

To reduce congestion along Ortiz Avenue, the project will widen the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided section, with a proposed typical section that allows for future expansion to six lanes via inside widening. Stormwater management will be provided by ponds located along the east side of the roadway within the existing right-of-way (R/W). The KCA team is providing comprehensive design services including roadway, drainage, traffic, lighting, structural, geotechnical, and utility design, as well as surveying, permitting, and maintenance of traffic plans.
