I-75 (SR 93) from Sumter Boulevard to North River Road

This 9.3-mile interstate project included the widening of the existing four-lane I-75 roadway to an interim six-lane section with provisions for the ultimate eight-lane typical. The interim widening was constructed towards the median with all of the stormwater facilities being located within the existing right-of-way. This project also included numerous wetlands, threatened and endangered species and the widening of the Deer Prairie Creek bridges. Permitting included coordination with the Southwest Florida Water Management District and US Army Corps of Engineers. Lighting was replaced at the Sumter Boulevard and River Road interchanges. Noise walls were evaluated but were not found to be feasible and cost reasonable. Drainage was designed to accommodate the ultimate eight-lane section within the existing right of way using linear ponds and ponds in the bifurcated area. The design was coordinated with a design-build Intelligent Transportation System that was under design but not yet constructed. The completion of the plans were accelerated when construction funds were advanced. The inside shoulder was constructed full depth so that it could be a future lane at minimal cost.
